The second day of the Baltic Chain Tour took the riders to the magical landscapes of South Estonia. They covered a 175.6 km route from Tartu–Antsla–Tartu. At the first passage of the Andre Farm intermediate sprint, the sharpest legs belonged to Markus Pajur (Estonian National Team), who was riding in the yellow leader’s jersey.
100 km before the finish, the peloton split in half, leaving a 27-rider breakaway group at the front, where Pajur was once again the fastest in the Urvaste intermediate sprint. 47 km before the finish, Josef Dirnbauer (Cycling Team Schwingshandl), wearing the green jersey, attacked from the lead group. He was joined 32 km before the finish by Rait Ärm (Estonian National Team) and Kristians Belohvosciks (Latvian National Team). At the second passage of the Andre Farm intermediate sprint, Ärm was the fastest of the trio.
The leaders’ trio, which had steadily held a 40-second gap to the peloton, broke apart after Ärm’s attack 5 km before the finish, ending with a solo victory for Ärm (3:47:50). Second place on the stage went to Latvian Belohvosciks (+00:21), and third to Lauri Tamm (Estonian National Team) (+00:44).
“When the group split, we had four men in the front group, again a very good situation for us, because the leader (Markus Pajur) was also there. At one point we started attacking, and luckily I managed to get away with two riders. I had to shake them off before the finish to go for the win,” said Ärm after the finish.
Ärm once again took the overall lead of the tour, followed by Kristians Belohvosciks (Latvian National Team) (+01:00) and Lauri Tamm (Estonian National Team) (+01:06). In addition to the yellow jersey, Ärm also holds the red jersey for the most combative rider. The green jersey of the most active rider will be worn on the next stage by Markus Pajur (Estonian National Team), and the white jersey for the best young rider belongs to Lauri Tamm. The best team remains the Estonian National Team, ahead of Team CO: Play Giant Sore (+01:44).
Tomorrow the final stage of the tour will be raced from Tartu – Kuremaa – Tartu. If Ärm manages to secure the tour victory tomorrow, he would achieve it for the third year in a row and be crowned a three-time winner of the Baltic Chain Tour.
